A real-time sound installation blending global recordings with visitor contributions into an evolving sonic landscape.
The World Ambient Sound Map is an extension of the Sound of the Earth project, commissioned for the Google Arts & Culture main office in Paris as a large-scale, wall-style installation. This work transforms archival field recordings into a living, evolving soundscape that reflects the diversity of our world through sound.
The installation draws from Google’s extensive sound library, using recordings from across the globe to create a continuously shifting ambient composition. The sounds are arranged and processed in real-time, forming an immersive, ever-changing musical experience.
Visitors are invited to contribute their own voices, which are recorded and spatially mapped within the installation, becoming part of the evolving composition. Through this interactive element, the project fosters a sense of connection between individuals and the global soundscape.
The speakers are arranged to form the shape of the world, visually reinforcing the idea that sound is a powerful expression of cultural diversity. The World Ambient Sound Map invites audiences to listen, explore, and engage with the vast sonic landscape of our planet, deepening their understanding of the world through sound.
